33003 brings a train into Westbury enroute from Bristol to Portsmouth. The usual motley collection of Mk1 coaches are in tow. Photographer unknown, dated 7/7/83. E68000, this is the one and only Tyneside Electric Motor Parcels Van passing Lovers Walk Depot at Brighton presumably on a test train. Very similar to the SR MLV's but without the battery power. Probably taken around November 1955. SR electric loco 20002 with a long and heavy boat train from Newhaven. Looks like at least 14 cars including a Pullman plus a pair of CCT's. Location is northbound near to Hamsey level crossing between Lewes and Cooksbridge. Thanks to Alan for nailing the location. Date unknown. 2 Bil 2104 departs from where? Nothing much in the background for clues other than the gas holder. Could it be Littlehampton, maybe Eastbourne? Date unknown. If anyone can help with information please let me know. Bulleid Diesel 10201 on an Up service at Raynes Park. M7 30051. The location screams Brighton to me and an on line search shows this was a Brighton allocated locomotive. Ex SECR 4-4-0 E1 31067 with a train of Bullied stock. Location and date unknown. Eastleigh works and ex LBSCR E1's 32139 and 32151 pose outside. Ex LBSCR E3 tank and Ex SR Z class tank. Location and date unknown. Q1 33001 with a long freight train. Location unknown, doesn't look like any 3rd rail. If you can help with the location of this or any other photo please let me know. West Country 34039 West Country 34046 'Braunton'. Thanks to K Spiller for finding out that this on duty 732. This is either the 1130am Brighton to Salisbury or 1553 return. Photo date can be also narrowed down to between June 1950 and Decmber 1953 because of the livery and cab modifications. Just need to work out why its pulling a rake of ex LMS Stanier coaches. Another way of reading teh headcodes is as an excusion train to Hastings, Margate or Dover which might make more sense of the stock. The third rail would make this a Hastings bound train then. Bulleids' Leader class 36001 was not the most sucessful thing he built. Location I assume is Brighton works. Date taken unknown. Ex LMS Mogul(1947)class 43031 with a long mixed freight train somewhere on the Midland Mainline. Ex LMS 4F 44210 with a long mixed freight train. Location unknown, could be Midland mainline somewhere. Date taken unknown. The only picture in this collection that the photographer has captioned. 46225 Took me a while to find out what this is. An ex LNWR G2a 0-8-0 tender locomotive. Location and date unknown. V2 60917 thunders through Raynes Park. I understand that this loco worked on the Southern Region between 14th May 1953 and 28th June 1953, due to a problem with the Merchant Navy class locomotives. Ex LNER B2 (B12 rebuilt) 61610 70000 Britannia class 70014 92091 a Crosti boilered BR standard 9F thunders along with a coal train.

The Intercity Executive Saloon 40513 in the formation of a southbound HST at Doncaster on a misty March day in 1984. This coach was available for hire and could be added to HST formations, don't think it could be loco hauled because of the electrical systems. The coach was sold to Irish Railways in 2001 and has returned to its former use as a catering vehicle. The unique Leyland Bus bodied Mk1 coach RDB977091 was a regular coach on the Brighton to Manchester XC workings. The failed class 47 would have made the peak struggle over the Devon banks although most of the exhaust seems to be coming from it! An unidentifed class 45 arrives at Bristol TM with a northbound cross-country service. 47036 passes Cardiff Canton with a freight train. 73100 'Brighton Evening Argus' naming ceremony. 73100 73128 drags a failed 47439 into Brighton with the 0727 service from Manchester. Photo taken 20/6/81. 73123 just named An unidentified class 73 tows the Southern Electric Groups 4Cor 3142 from the Nene Valley Railway to the Pullman sheds at Brighton. Seen here at Haywards Heath. Photo taken 5/9/86. After my Dad took early retirement from the bus company ( BH&D / Southdown ) he worked for a few summers as a driver on Volks Electric Railway. Photo taken 12/4/82. 08648 trundles into the platform at Brighton to release the stock off an excusion train just arrived from Cleethorpes. Date taken unknown. 47367 makes an unusual visitor to Montpelier sidings at Brighton. Behind it is ex works 319030 and alongside is preserved 4SUB 4732. The unusual side discharge hoppers were only allowed to operate between these two points and Eastleigh Yard due to being out of gauge. The view now would be very different. The train on platform 6 has the road to depart, the leading unit is certainly a 4Cig the second unit probably a 4Big as in green livery. In Montpelier Yard are a Mk1 CK, BSK and another CK along with parcels vans. On the LH side the locomotive shed has yet to be demolished. The slide is date stamped July 1967. Photographer unknown. Approaching Horley station with a Reading to Gatwick service is Metro-Cammell class 101 DMU set L842. Vehicles 53314, 59110 and 53327 make up the set. Date taken and photographer unknown. 09003 hauls the stock off the 0727 from Manchester into Top Yard at Brighton to allow the loco to run round. Photo taken from the Station Switchboard April 1984. 47437 heads the 0920 Brighton to Manchester whilst 33012 waits in platform 2 with the 0830 Brighton to Cardiff. Photo date unknown but it was obviously a frosty night. A 12Cig formation passes over the Adur river bridge at Shoreham I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I rediscovered this slide. Taken inside Lovers Walk depot is EM2 27000 2 Bil 2090 heads 4SUB 4732 into Brighton. Photo taken 1984. Brighton station open day and withdrawn 5Bel 3053 makes an appearance. Not sure of the date but a recently purchased slide I have of 3053 is dated 3/9/77. D class 4-4-0 31734 with a fully SECR ensemble forming a Brighton to Tonbridge service in April 1953. The train has just passed over the long curved London Rd viaduct and is slowing for its first stop at London Road Brighton. The area to the right behind the train was the original site of Brighton's carraige shed. Photo by Peter Hay BMRC archieves. It's 1953 and stopping at London Road Brighton is L class 31771 with two birdcage sets in tow. The platform canopies and gas lamps have long gone as has the downside buildings. Trains from London to Brighton via Oxted often had substantial loads leaving London but the 4 car Maunsell set was all that was left as H2 Atlantic 33050 and 33051 head one of several special loco hauled trains between Brighton and Victoria on the 22/9/91. This was to comemorate the 150th anniversary of the Brighton line opening. 33061 with an extremely clean rake of MK1 coaches at Mill Road Patcham. I remember sitting here one day taking photos when a women walking a dog started chatting me up, then mentioned the Adders that basked there. I remained standing the rest of the time. Sifting through another box of slides found at my parents I came across this one of 37109 at Mill Road Patcham with a Christmas Merrymaker from Yarmouth. Date taken unknown. 45113 at Gatwick with the Brighton to Derby XC service For about 4 weeks in 1985 the afternoon Manchester to Brighton and return diagram to Derby had class 45 traction. After finishing work most evenings we joined the 1816 Brighton to Derby as far as Gatwick, time for a few beers then on to the evening Manchester to Brighton service home. 45131 about to leave Gatwick. 45131 45131 trundles back into the platform at Brighton before heading north with the 1816 service to Derby. The new subway from the station car park to Montpelier sidings is under construction with a ‘high security’ willow fence to keep trespassers out. There was just time to ride this train to Gatwick leg it upstairs into the airport for a pint and then back down for to the platform for the 1620? Manchester to Brighton service. 45136 at Gatwick with the XC service from Brighton to Derby. Heading to the coast at Sweethill Bridge. Patcham we see a class 47 heading a Merrymaker excursion. Certainly prior to the station remodelling. 47487 accelerates through Preston Park on a winters day with the 0920 Brighton to Manchester service. The roof to Preston Park signalbox can just be glimpsed above the train. Date approx 1980. 47489 nears the end of its journey on the 0744 Manchester to Brighton service at Mill Road Patcham. 47526 powers out of Patcham Tunnel with the 1520 Brighton to Manchester service. He travelled around a lot of the Midlands for work, as a salesman dealing mainly in hardware before "settling down" as the hardware buyer for Wilkinsons ( Wilko ). Most photos were taken in the East Midlands from the late 1970's onwards. Lots of interesting trains and locations many have long been scrapped or closed. I was very fortunate that Tony captioned and dated almost all of the slides and photos. I managed to tag along during school holiday times and have often taken near duplicate shots myself but these are not in any of my other collections. Further photos will uploaded as I get them scanned and cleaned up a bit, I hope you enjoy them. Photos and slides have been transfered to jpg format via a Canon 5200F scanner.
