The first wagon remained upright but derailed. The derailment took place on the 14/6/88, I expect this photo was taken then or the following day. Now to me this train has got to be either the 0717 Manchester to Brighton to the afternoon return working, the rake is a typical formation for this working. The train is probably on the fast lines so this would make it the afternoon service from Brighton. Location somewhere between Balcombe Tunnel Jct and Earlswood....I'd have a guess at Salfords....or maybe just south of Three Bridges.
