73100 "Brighton Evening Argus" shortly after its naming ceremony at its home station. Photo taken 3/12/1980. Brighton Breezy - trains around Brighton 1970's onwards. |

| Andy,
Many thanks for sharing this photo with us. If you are hazy about dates then this one is fairly easy to establish. The article about this event (100th anniversary) was published in the Argus on 3/12/1980. I did try and get a photo of the loco from the Argus, but they say they "lost" their photo archive when they moved offices. I was able to get a photocopy of the article as it appeared that day.
You don't by any chance have a shot of the same loco when is was briefly renumbered 73801 in July 1989 - don't know what event this commemorated??
Thanks again
Geoff |

| This is a truly great class 50 Picture from the era I remember them the best,IE unrefurbished and tatty and
not looked after by their new Region.I wonder if the Western thought that enough failures in service might force
British Rails hand into giving them some more class 47/4s.
This would have allowed the Western to send the unloved
boxes of tricks back to the LMR until the HSTs came along
to take over the fastest services. |

| Ah an "unferurbished" and "unamed" class 50. This is how
I can best remember them.I could well have been at Reding
on the very same Day this Photo was taken as I was in London for a Holiday in this Year.I can remember getting on
to a London bound Train from Reading which was hauled by 50 011 and the local enthusiats thought we were "crazy" to be getting hauled by this crappy type of Locomotive.I can clearly remember telling them that one day they will love the 50s, they all thought we were insane.and HSTs were better.Remember the Westerns had
been gone since the previous February and things were
very very different on the Western Region, and they looked as thought they would never be the same again.
I had always liked the Hoovers it might have been their
novelty value but I always felt they were being sold short by the enthusiasts of the time. The only thing the
Western still had apart from the 50s were the class 47 namers.I was proven right though for whithin a couple of
years the 50s were being very much sought after, which is how it should have been all along. |

| I was also at this open Day,and the Wrks did try their best
to put on a show. The Class 45 being hoisted over everbodies Heads was a rare treat.Although I remembe that the only Locomotive in the old Technical Centre was
a class 17 Clayton. I was expecting a Warship and one of
the Hymeks. |

| This shot brings back the memories,I can remember the
British Rail Flag flying from the Buildings of the "Plant".
Also throughout the 1970s we used to dream about been
given access to the main errecting Shops with all those
Deltics and 31s, and Class 37s undergoing overhauls. I think only Swindon was more of a dream for us. |

| I had a very rich Auntie who used to live in Dyke Road Hove
there was always a Rolls Royce or two driving up and down
the Leafy wide street.I was never really that interested in
the Southern 3rd Rail Electrics.However the 33s 73s and
74s were a different matter.The last time I got to see a
class 74 Electro Diesel was at Waterloo in the Summer of
1977, when 74 003 was pictured by my in charge of a parcels Train. |

| This was a Year when the Mighty Deltics could still be seen
in charge of some Top Link Jobs, before the HST monopoly
which occured one or two years later.Although St Paddy
and Nimbus had been put out to Grass the Deltics were
just going about their work pretty much as before. However
this very same year also marks a Watershed in my Life as
it was the last year I activly persued the Railways.I was
15 by now and other interests were taking over my Mind.
The most important was my Apprenticship ,this and 1980
was the Year I left School and the last year all my Mates
were together before we all went out seperate ways in life.I suppose I could put it was the very best Year of my
life as worries were then unknown to us.Looking back
I did always thrill at sights like the Big Hard Working Geordie in this Picture. These engines will always be Gateshead Engines to me as this was how I remember them in their prime,(and what a prime it was).Gone but
never ever forgotten 55 011 The Royal Northumberland
Fusiliers a truly great Locomotive.
