Andy Gibbs Photo Gallery - British Rail through the 70's and 80's.
Welcome
Welcome to a big photo resource that is getting bigger and bigger. There are just over 1500 photos at the last count.
Each album is being added to on a regular basis, as I get the slides and prints scanned through. Galleries include Brighton Breezy - Rail photos in the Brighton area taken during the 70's and 80's, the Tony Lower collection - my late uncles fantastic collection of rail photos mainly from the East Midlands and the J.H.W Kent collection of b&w photos from the 50's and 60's. Keep coming back plenty more to add. If you've liked what you've seen please be free to add a link to this site. The vast majority of photos have been taken by me but regular purchases on eBay have filled in various gaps, where known the original photographer is credited.
Technical info...yawn...all of the earlier images are scanned from photos or slides via a Canon 5200F slide scanner.
My modern digital rail photographs have been moved to another gallery to keep this for the old'uns. There is a link on the LH side of the screen to the new gallery. My American and European rail photos have also been moved to another gallery, see the links down the LH side of the screen for details. Thank you for looking. Andy Gibbs. July 2009.

30051_Brighton.jpg   M7 30051. The location screams Brighton to me and an on line search shows this was a Brighton allocated locomotive.  The J.H.W. Kent Railway Photograph Collection  (11)
10 34046.jpg   West Country 34046 'Braunton'. Thanks to K Spiller for finding out that this on duty 732. This is either the 1130am Brighton to Salisbury or 1553 return. Photo date can be also narrowed down to between June 1950 and Decmber 1953 because of the livery and cab modifications. Just need to work out why its pulling a rake of ex LMS Stanier coaches. Another way of reading teh headcodes is as an excusion train to Hastings, Margate or Dover which might make more sense of the stock. The third rail would make this a Hastings bound train then.  The J.H.W. Kent Railway Photograph Collection  (11)

Acquired from my good friend Derek, a collection of slides from the late 1970's through the 1980's that dovetail nicely into my own collections. Latest addition includes photos from Paddington, Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross, probably the same day out in London. There is also a large batch of Scottish photos, most of locations are unknown, if you can help with the locations please let me know. I've come across some more slides . Latest slides added 17/4/09.

Any updates to the Tony Lower collection will be posted directly to it.
The whole collection has now reached over 1600 photographs and over 180000 hits. Thanks for visiting.

18th Jan 2007The J.H.W. Kent Railway Photograph Collection (21 images)
Many years ago I acquired some black and white photographs mainly taken on the Southern Region in the 1950's and early 60's. I have only recently discovered one had the photographers name stamped on the back and a couple had captions too. So here is my tribute to Mr Kent. If you have any suggestions or corrections for where the photos were taken please let me know. I have recently been informed that Joe Kent used to be a carpenter at the Pullman Carriage Works at Preston Park which have just been demolished. He also lived just one street away from me in Patcham....small world. Collection completed.
10th Jan 2007Trent Junction to Clay Cross (74 images)
This is a collection to segregate the large amount of photographs I have taken at various locations between the two junctions. The vast majority of the photographs are undated due to my dire record keeping......but at least I know where they were taken! Latest photos added 5/3/09.
    27th Dec 2006Coach file (27 images)
In amongst the many railway photographs I have taken were a number of side on photos of various coaches. The intention was to use them for modelling purposes. Here they are for your perusal. Photos will be added as I scan them in. Last updated 24/9/08.
    15th Sep 2006Eastern Escapades (149 images)
BR's Eastern Region through the late 1970's and 1980's and early 1990's. Lots of Deltics and class 40's. Locations include Doncaster, Leeds, York, Sheffield, East Anglia and Berwick.

    Latest photo added 4/11/09.
14th Sep 2006Scottish adventures - BR Scottish region through the 1980's (92 images)
Working for BR and with, at the time, just 4 free passes a year you tended to get the maxium mileage out of them. It was amazing what obscure routes you get get out of a Falmer to Thurso pass! This collection of scanned railway photographs and slides is a result of my trips to Scotland during the 1980's. Class 26's, 27's and 40's galore. This was great time for us spotters. Lots more to add, please come back to check for updates. Several photo locations are to say the least a little hazy, please feel free to correct me if the caption is wrong. Latest photo added 23/9/09.
    14th Sep 2006Southern through the 70's and 80's (204 images)
A selection of my photographs scanned from prints and slides taken across the former BR Southern region. Mainly taken in the 1970's and 80's. Several from open days at Selhurst Depot. Many more to be added, so keep coming back to check. There are also some purchased slides and prints that fill some gaps, where known the original photographer is credited. Latest photo added 28/10/09.
    21st Aug 2006Midland Meanderings (183 images)
A trawl through photos and slides taken on BR's Midland Region from the late 1970's and through into the 1980's. Once I started working for British Rail those free passes sure got a bashing. With relatives in Nottingham that put a huge area at my disposal for day trips. Locations include North Wales, Manchester, Guide Bridge the East Midlands and Birmingham areas. Many of my photos were taken alongside my late Uncle Tony Lower, whose collection you can visit at the bottom of the page. Duplicate photos have been avoided. There are also a few purchased slides that fill some gaps, where known the original photographer is credited.
    Latest photo added 23/9/09.
    21st Aug 2006Western Wanderings (155 images)
A collection of photos on BR's Western Region taken from the late 1970's through the 1980's. Locations include Cardiff, West Wales, Bristol, Reading and much more. There are also a lot of photos from a full summer saturday on the sea wall at Dawlish, this involved us getting the overnight Waterloo to Exeter mail train and picking up the first train to Dawlish this gave us a full 12 hours there. Needless to say it wasn't a sunny day!
There also some purchased images that I have copyright of. Where known the original photographer is credited.
    Latest photo was added 23/9/09.
    9th Aug 2006Brighton Breezy - trains around Brighton 1970's onwards. (248 images)
This collection contains many of my photographs taken in the Brighton area from the late 1970's onwards. I started working for BR in 1978 and worked at many ticket offices in the area especially Brighton, Haywards Heath and Hove, although I do seem to have managed to get out and get some photos! 30 years on I still work for "the railway".
I do wish I had kept a better record of the photographs dates etc. Spot any errors or can assist with information please let me know.
Photos have mainly been taken with either a Fuji ST605n or a Practica BC1. Very early ones are taken on a Zenith EM...remember them? Photographs and slides are transfered via a Canon 5200F scanner. Keep coming back for the latest updates. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
There are also a few purchased slides that fill some gaps, where known the original photographer is credited.
    Latest photos were added 4/11/09.
16th Jul 2006The Tony Lower Railway Photograph Collection (304 images) Updated
This is a selection of slides and photos scanned from the collection of my late Uncle, Tony Lower. He travelled around a lot of the Midlands for work, as a salesman dealing mainly in hardware before "settling down" as the hardware buyer for Wilkinsons ( Wilko ). Most photos were taken in the East Midlands from the late 1970's onwards. Lots of interesting trains and locations many have long been scrapped or closed. I was very fortunate that Tony captioned and dated almost all of the slides and photos. I managed to tag along during school holiday times and have often taken near duplicate shots myself but these are not in any of my other collections. Further photos will uploaded as I get them scanned and cleaned up a bit, I hope you enjoy them. Photos and slides have been transfered to jpg format via a Canon 5200F scanner. Latest photos were added 20/10/09.
